Patch based workflow

this is more like a development question, not much related to msys2 per se. But as msys2 does this very well, i thought to ask here.

I have been wondering about how does patch based forks work? That is, a fork where you want to sync with upstream while still being able to add your own modification (in terms of patch?) on top of that.

how does it differs from branch based workflow, where u make changes in a branch and keep on rebasing (i guess? as i don't know much git) to sync with upstream?

following are some examples of projects where they modify from upstream i could think of:

• VS Codium
• msys2-runtime
• git-for-windows
• forjego
• ... etc
