mijutu made me aware of https://matrix.org/docs/projects/bridge/mand-m-bridge and https://matrix.org/docs/projects/bridge/matrix-appservice-mumble two bridges for Matrix<->Mumble, both without calls. |

So, this topic comes up from time to time
Teamspeak is moving to matrix as well - https://twitter.com/teamspeak/status/1589621116032585728 so it might be worth a discussion and see where this leads. I dropped this already in the chat and got some answers so its already a bit influenced by that.
On Matrix there is also the issue raised about "Discordification" and for quite some groups that means "Voicechannels" as well. The combination of a nice chat and voice-channels seems to be enough for quite some groups. So, right now Teamspeak is moving to do the same as well with their "Homebase"-development, it seems. And i think this is what people would like mumble to become as well, a nice discord-alternative while in my understanding it does not try to be (and thats perfectly finde in my opinion)
But this pops up in Matrix/Synapse/Element often as well
Mumble is a centralized service while matrix is federated and not centralized. There is one service that is integrated into matrix as a widget, that works well in my experience - Jitsi, a videconferencing service. This in mind, i thought it might be better to create a proper Widget to integrate into Element (or other matrix clients). Currently there is https://github.com/johni0702/mumble-web available but the last commit was 2021 and there are 72 issues open and it seems like a completely separate project and not 'officially' related to mumble. Maybe someone has tried that already an can give us some impressions.
So, maybe it wold be nice to talk with developers of matrix/synapse/element to make a 'official' supported integration(widget), because mumble is already there and has experience in handling voice-only-calls/rooms whatever. Maybe its easier to do that after the mumble-core is rewritten? Don't know.
I guess this would probably still have some challenges ahead, for example user-management, access control, permissions, channels and so on. Maybe its even needed to properly write this out to see if its possible. But, it seems like it might be possible, thanks to @Johni0702 and his efforts! :)
I for one would absolutely love to have proper voice-channels in my matrix-client.
