Google started releasing the platform tools (adb, fastboot, dmtracedump, etc1tool, hprof-conv, sqlite3) seperately:

macOS
Linux
(Windows)

Initially I created this repository for people who wanted to install the adb and/or fastboot binaries without downloading the whole Android SDK. This seems superfluous now.

On the other hand, I could still write a script for an automatic installation of the binaries, a bash script which downloads the newest platform-tools zip, and copies the binaries into the bin folder. This is probably what I will do next, but don't hold your breath, this is not on top of my priority list.
