Connecting to Connections?

Hi, all. I'm a humanities guy, mostly, but I'm trying to learn to code for my dissertation. Specifically, I'd like to code a large, complex international family tree (with some degree of inbreeding, since it's the middle ages.)
I was just wondering if it's possible to connect to connections? Or should I make different color connections for marriages, affairs, and offspring? I feel like adding connections from connections, though it might be difficult to add to the source code, could really open up a lot more design possibilities.
Although, if this is already a feature, by all means scold me for not reading the documentation closely enough!
