Was the site on Heroku’s fee tier? I can help with hosting fees.

Wanted to say ditto. Can also help with hosting fees if that is the issue.

I would love to see pronoun.is back online, and would gladly throw a few bucks a month into a fund or something for hosting costs. In the meantime, I made my own version at https://my.geeky.gay/pronouns/ . Its not the same though, since its all statically generated.

It looks like @morganastra is on it. I'm happy to share my VPS and/or lend some hobbiest-level sysadmin skills if that would be helpful.

Leaving a "me too" as someone who would be able to contribute VPS/DNS/or hosting fees :)

Just got a PR against one of my pages for this (I was unaware it was down). Seems like pronouns.org is another option but it is very... wordy.

A few friends are soft launching a new site to help serve the need. More features to come~

I eventually stood up my own instance: https://pronouns.alysbrooks.com/.

and i cloned it wholesale in PHP because i can't read clojure and i like CGI:

pronoun.gdn is jank and closed source

That's sad. I was hoping to have a replacement for some code I have that suggests a list of available pronoun sets by fetching from the pronoun.is source code.

Maybe you'll open it eventually?

@Lana-chan
Copy link

maybe eventually! i hacked it together in literally just a couple of hours and didn't even init a repo for it because it's bad. my pronoun list is just pronoun island's plus my byte/byteself ones. it's really nothing to write home about and i'm sleep deprived. thanks for checking it out though!

I feel that sleep-deprivation brain… In a few weekends from now you might have the energy to clean it up :)

I tweeted, but if you're looking for a place to host for free, Azure Static Web Apps might work: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/products/app-service/static

I also don't know a thing about clojure.

@Lana-chan

FYI (since i got an email for a new comment here) pronoun garden is now open: https://github.com/Lana-chan/pronoun-gdn/

@alysbrooks

@codemonkey85 Clojure’s a little obscure, unfortunately. Maybe I’ll try to set up CI on my fork so people can just grab the JAR or Docker image if they’re interested in hosting.

First we waited on an API that might never exist:
witch-house/pronoun.is#96

Then the pronoun.is site went offline completely:
witch-house/pronoun.is#147

Eventually someone came along to make a clone that was easier to host,
written using Svelte instead of Clojure:
https://github.com/lucasew/svelte-pronounisland

We can fork that so we have control over when it's updated:
https://github.com/sopel-irc/pronoun-service

And now we have our own pronoun site to go with this plugin:
https://pronouns.sopel.chat/

(But it still doesn't have an API.)

It's a shame to lose pronoun.is, though. That's the Best™ domain. :(

I really miss pronoun.is, because you really can’t replace that sort of perfect domain.

Context
-----
An email from @rutson alerted me that pronoun.is is missing, presumed... missing. witch-house/pronoun.is#147

Change
------

Move to pronouns.org

Considerations
-------

There are a number of alternatives but I went with this one because of the simple URI.
@bixfrankonis

I came here to lament the loss of pronoun.is because it makes for a perfect human sentence of a URL, only to discover I said as much early last year. Still no progress on what we might be able to do to bring this back online?

https://nitter.net/morganastra (the creator of pronoun.is) has protected her tweets and her website https://morganastra.me is unreachable. i have no idea how else to contact her or to know what her desire to bring the website under that domain back is. many people (myself included) have abandoned it for mirrors/alternatives elsewhere now. i hope she is well, more than i care about her relaunching this tool

@bixfrankonis

Ah, that's a fair decision in terms of what to value, and not something I knew.

The domain expired on 3 Mar 2024 and was made available for re-registration today at 13:00 UTC. It was immediately registered by a domain sniper service and does not have any website hosted on it yet. The new owner's intents are still unknown. Future will tell.

Now pronoun.is is serving a zip containing an archive of the original site on a hobbyist webserver. A small group of friends and I were hoping to snipe it and host the original software but this is blocked unless the current pronoun.is owner puts up some contact info, which they might considering the modify date on that zip is 2024-04-20 (3 days ago)

DrMaxNix commented Apr 23, 2024

I also tried to snipe it! I actually have waited for over a year to do it and was very disappointed when it didn't work :< GG to anyone else who tried to snipe the domain, I feel with you!
I had the old website ready to run to have the website back up instantly after successfully sniping the domain.. (https://pronoun.lol if you are curious)
After that I wanted to connect with you all to start work on a new improved version together in some sort of git organization!

So if the currently unknown owner of the pronoun.is domain is reading this: Please bring back the original page and connect with the community! I have infrastructure ready to host the page!
And in case anyone else would like to collaborate to work together on a pronouns page possibly hosted on another cool domain, feel free to respond or send me an e-mail! <3

Chiming in with my support—I haven't had much luck sniping domains in the past, but happy to help however I can.

Pronoun Island (the old `my.pronoun.is`) died within the last couple years and,
as of right now, is only partially reconstructed by an unknown party. See:

witch-house/pronoun.is#147

Just linking to the pronouns.org general sharing page for now until I figure
what to do. None of the site resources for specific pronouns allow combos.
He/they are equally acceptable in my case but, even with the old pronoun.is,
I'd have to make one link for each (to the he/him/his and they/them/theirs
pages). Is there a site somewhere that allows combos? Two separate links seems
silly, e.g.:

https://pronoun.monster/he/him/his/him/himself
https://pronoun.monster/they/them/them/their/themself

Although, if I wanted to treat the pronouns individually, that'd open up use of
`u-x-pronoun-normative`, etc. from the experimental microformat.

Although, I still don't like those since they're so English specific. Per the
pronouns microformat discussion page, while English only has four cases
(subjective, objective, reflexive, possessive), German has five, Finnish has
thirteen...
