Feature-139: Path Construction & Clean Up #143

Summary of Changes:

Cleaned up usage of how paths are created (not using string concatenation, and unpacking lists where relevant)
Cleaned up pytests & docstrings to further resolve linting warnings
Fixed bug where code may not have possibly identified files and instead checked only for existence of a directory
