Crewmate's Roots

Crewmate is a fork of the Open Source collaboration software formerly known as Teambox. Starting with version 4.0, Teambox became a closed source, SAS and then changed it's name to Redbooth.

Why should you be interested in Crewmate?

Email was never made for group collaboration. Send out an email to a group, and watch responses dribble in, many without people seeing what others wrote. Trying to coordinate and collaborate via Email often ends up with missed communications, deadlines, approvals. Crewmate solves that. Create a Conversation about an issue. Invite members of your crew to join in. Every time someone posts, an email goes out to those tagged in your conversation. Think of a conversation much like a post on Facebook- with the ability to have a discussion. At some point- you can turn the conversation into a task and set deadlines. Along the way, you can post pictures, documents, even video files- and embed things- all in your private workspace. All in a secure environment- on your own server, without having to pay fees per user.

How does Crewmate make you money?

A small advertising agency has to coordinate between many freelancers on a project and the client. A creative brief can be uploaded, tasks assigned, deadlines made and even time tracked for invoicing. Different concepts can be posted- and only the creative team can look at them and discuss- before the client is invited to see them. Clients feel like they are a part of the project- and you don't have to pay for each person you involve in the project, unlike SAS offerings like Redbooth, Trello, etc.

What do you need to use Crewmate?

As a client user, or collaborator- just a browser- everything is done within a web environment- with no software to download or install. Just like using Facebook. For your organization- a server that can run Ruby and SQL. Since it's an open source project, you will need someone who has an understanding of how to install and configure a Ruby app. Currently, there is no installer package available through Softaculus or other installer packages.
