✊ Going to a protest and you don’t know wtf to do? This resource aims to provide you with information to prepare yourself.

Purpose

This guide was created to easily share information for new and experienced protestors to protect themselves. Activist information is often shared via PDF through private, anonymous channels for security. In 2020, folks who want to show up don’t have the time, network, or resources to find buried information. This guide compiles written and oral history tactics and tips into a format that is fully open and accessible.

Contributing

Suggestions to add, remove, or amend content are welcome! Please open an issue or submit a pull request. If you are not familiar with GitHub, use this form to suggest changes.

Nonconstructive suggestions will be ignored.

Plans for future development

  • Translation and localization
  • Simpler, more concise text (goal: Grade 5 reading level)
  • Additional text information
  • Additional infographics
  • Additional glossary entries
  • Additional resource links

Content guidelines

This guide aims to be a broad resource for participation in demonstration. It is not a toolkit for organizing. It is not a comprehensive resource for everything relating to a protest. It is not a news round-up.

Content should be as accurate as possible, with a focus on quality over quantity. Text is written at a Grade 6-7 reading level checked via Hemingway app.

Installation

protest.wtf runs on Jekyll. It uses Primer to style content and leverages anchored heading links styled by just-the-docs.

If you’d like to run the website on your machine, install the dependencies (requires Ruby, Node, and NPM):

gem install jekyll && npm install

To start the local server, run

jekyll serve
