*Title of Research Study: Communicating With Interactive Data Visualizations*
# Consent and Authorization Document
We are inviting you to take part in a research study. Please read the entire consent form in addition to this summary,
ask questions, and take time to understand the study before you make any decision.
#### Purpose of the Study
Data exploration and visualization platforms are increasingly
common online. The purpose of this study is to learn
more about how people select data in visualizations and use them for communicating ideas.
#### Tasks | ||
It will take approximately 15-20 minutes to finish this test.
You will be shown a series of data visualizations accompanied by short captions.
Your task is to answer a short survey about each visualization, indicating your opinion on how effective they are.
We suggest maximizing your browser window as some charts can be on the larger side.
#### Risks to study participants
Each participant in this study is assigned a random ID for analyses. As such,
your participation will remain anonymous and your responses will
not be used to identify you.
#### Benefits to research participants and others
There may be no direct benefit to reserach participants.
The possible benefits include exposure to interesting data
visualization, along with helping inform the
development of future data exploration platforms.
#### Record keeping and confidentiality
Records of your participation in this study will be held
confidential so far as permitted by law. However, the study
investigators, the sponsor or its designee and, under certain
circumstances, the University of Utah Institutional
Review Board (IRB) will be able to inspect and have access to
this data. Any publication or presentation of the data will not
identify you. | ||
The data collected in this study is only being used for the present study and not for future research.
#### Cost/Payment | ||
You will be compensated $5.00 for participating via Prolific.
#### Contact | ||
For more information about this research or about the rights of
research participants, or in case of research-related injury,
contact: Maxim Lisnic (maxim.lisnic@utah.edu).
Contact the Institutional Review Board (IRB) if you have questions regarding your rights as a research participant. Also, contact the IRB if you have questions, complaints or concerns which you do not feel you can discuss with the investigator. The University of Utah IRB may be reached by phone at (801) 581-3655 or by e-mail at irb@hsc.utah.edu.
You may also contact the Research Participant Advocate (RPA) by phone at (801) 581-3803 or by email at participant.advocate@hsc.utah.edu.
Your participation in this research is voluntary
Your refusal to participate will not result in any penalty to you
or any loss of benefits to which you may otherwise be entitled.
You may decide to stop participating in the research at any time
without penalty or loss of other benefits. The project
investigators retain the right to cancel or postpone the
experimental procedures at any time they see fit.
#### By accepting below,
You acknowledge that you have been informed about and consent to
be a participant in the study described above. Make sure that your
questions are answered to your satisfaction before accepting.
You will receive a copy of this consent agreement.
