K'Rakoths
The K'Rakoths are an extinct (and therefore non-playable) race introduced by the K'Rakoth mod, as well as its hallmark lore element.
K'Rakoths formed one of the elder galactic civilizations that co-existed alongside the Ancients. They can be described as large aquatic mollusks with multiple tentacles for limbs and monocular vision. They also had soft fins stretching from their foreheads to upper backs. Interestingly, some of their clothing resembled naturally grown shells.
At their prime, they owned numerous oceanic planets, some of which were transformed into sprawling ecumenopoli, on top of many enclaves on other types of planets. The roots of their successful expansion lie in three major factors that helped them gain the advantage over other contemporary races. Firstly, K'Rakoths had discovered ways to manipulate the fourth dimension which were widely applied in construction, warfare, and even non-erchius-dependent FTL travel. Secondly, they had successfully subjugated at least 4 less developed races, turning them into their vassals (or "servant races" as they called them). Finally, the K'Rakoths were seemingly the only race that knew how to smelt an incredibly durable Chthonic Alloy, as well as harness the so-called "aeon energy" that may or may not be extradimensional in origin.
Their society was built on the principles of technocracy: only the most skilled and experienced of the K'Rakoths were allowed to make decisions. A great emphasis was put on enlightenment, research and rationality. Despite this, they were no strangers to spirituality and religion, even though non-scientific beliefs slowly faded out of their culture until the Prophecy of Ri'shaan emerged.
While there are no proper K'Rakothan NPCs to speak of, the player can find many of their abandoned structures across the universe.
Most of K'Rakothan dungeons can be found on ocean-type worlds such as Oceanic and Boiling planets (as well as Arctic planets if Project Redemption patch is installed). Boiling planets in particular feature many K'Rakoth-built structures on land, underwater and beneath the ground.
In the meantime, other planet types may feature some of their more specialized dungeons such as Churches of Ri'shaan and Terraforming Laboratories. Since they used to have a greater significance to K'Rakothan people, they remain protected by Eldritch Shield Generators that prevent player from destroying blocks. Nevertheless, these generators can be either turned off or destroyed with enough firepower.
Lastly, a few K'Rakothan remnants are guarded by current Starbound races: for instance, the Glitch Devout Towers have incorporated vaults made from Chthonic Alloy blocks, while the Miniknog-owned Area 48 is dedicated to researching and reverse-engineering some of the elder technologies.
Sometimes K'Rakothan ruins are so vast that they may form their own new biomes. For example, any Boiling planet's orbit has a chance to feature either a Kessler Field or a Shattered Shield instead of the vanilla Asteroid biome. Moreover, the underground section of the same planet type can contain a Chthonic Megacomplex mini-biome where both types of Eldrones spawn naturally.
- The K'Rakoths and their general aesthetic are loosely inspired by elder races described in H. P. Lovecraft's works, namely the Cthulhi.
- Their species name is a reference to both the legend of the kraken and various entities from the Cthulhu Mythos (such as Azathoth and Yog-Sothoth).
- K'Rakoths are one of the races that do not have a corresponding fossil.
